Not all games are equally beneficial, and the amount of time spent matters, but the blanket dismissal of gaming as bad for your brain is not supported by the evidence.

Fast paced action games, particularly first person shooters like Call of Duty and Valorant, have been studied more than any other game genre, and the findings are consistently positive for visual attention. Researchers at the University of Rochester found that action game players are significantly better at tracking multiple moving objects simultaneously, filtering out visual distractions, and switching attention between tasks compared to non gamers. Puzzle games like Tetris, Portal, and various block building games exercise spatial reasoning: the ability to mentally rotate objects, visualize three dimensional structures, and understand spatial relationships. A landmark study at the University of Toronto found that playing Tetris for just 12 hours improved spatial reasoning skills, and these improvements were particularly pronounced in participants who had lower spatial abilities to begin with. Other research has shown that Minecraft, the massively popular sandbox game, improves spatial visualization skills in both children and adults. The beauty of puzzle games as cognitive training tools is that they are engaging enough to sustain long term play without the intensity or time commitment that more complex games require. This makes puzzle games an accessible option for people who are interested in the brain benefits of gaming but do not have the time or interest to invest in larger, more complex titles. Role Playing Games and Social Cognition

Role playing games, both digital and tabletop, exercise social and emotional cognition in ways that other game genres do not. Several business researchers have studied the leadership skills that develop in online gaming communities and found significant overlap with the competencies that organizations value in their managers. This does not mean that listing World of Warcraft guild leader on your resume will get you a promotion, but the skills themselves are real and transferable.

The Balance Between Benefit and Excess

The cognitive benefits of gaming follow a pattern that researchers describe as an inverted U curve. Moderate gaming, roughly 3 to 7 hours per week, is associated with the strongest cognitive benefits. Below that amount, you may not get enough practice for the training effects to take hold. Above that amount, the benefits plateau and can eventually reverse as excessive gaming begins to interfere with sleep, physical activity, social relationships, and other activities that are also important for cognitive health. A person who games for 40 hours a week at the expense of sleep, exercise, and face to face social interaction is likely doing net harm to their cognitive function despite the gaming specific benefits.

The type of game matters as well. The research consistently shows that different genres train different cognitive skills, so varying the types of games you play is more beneficial than playing the same type exclusively. An ideal gaming diet for cognitive benefit might include some action games for visual attention, strategy games for planning and working memory, puzzle games for spatial reasoning, and narrative games for social cognition. This is not to say you should treat gaming like a prescription: play what you enjoy, because engagement and motivation are essential for any training effect to occur. But if you are interested in maximizing the cognitive benefits, mixing up genres is more effective than sticking to one type. Play what you love, be mindful of how much time you spend, and take comfort in the fact that your hobby is doing more for your brain than most people realize.
